Traditionally made in Southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Alsace, the Landjäger – a semi-dried salami sausage – is a popular snack food, especially for people who enjoy embarking on hiking adventures. This delectable beef salami was once a favourite amongst soldiers, largely because it could be stored without refrigeration and was available in single-meal portions. As a meal, Landjäger salami sausage is enjoyed boiled and eaten with potatoes and fresh greens!

These are wonderfully moreish – really tasty salami sticks that are good and thick, with no bits of gristle. They’ve got a wonderful flavour that does not repeat on me as cheaper salamis do, and are really quite filling – a little goes a long way! We sliced a couple into chunks and served as part of a charcuterie board. Delicious!

If you like landjäger, then this is a great example of it. As a dried sausage it, of course, has a tough skin — that’s the nature of all of these kinds of dried sausages I’ve had. But the taste and texture of these is particularly excellent.
