Top 10 German Foods

Being the expert in German sausages, we thought it was only right that we inform you about the top 10 food from Germany. Believe it or not it’s not just about sausages.

Sausages

But first we need to kick of the is top 10 by highlighting the most popular sausages. An extremely popular German cuisine with millions eaten every year.

1. Bratwurst

Whether it’s Oktoberfest, a Christmas Market or just a Monday, Bratwurst is a must. Of course we all know that Bratwurst is the most iconic sausage associated with Germany. Dating back to 1313, the herby unsmoked sausage flavour speaks for itself, and is 100% a favourite German product.

2. Weisswurst

From the Bavarian region of Germany we have another unsmoked white sausage. Traditionally eaten between breakfast and lunch, the Weisswurst is a must, especially if you are fond of Munich cuisine. From physical appearance this may look similar to the Bratwurst, however these sausages are boiled so they remain white (well, slightly grey once cooked). Served with sweet mustard to dip, and a salty Brezel. Definitely a top 10 German food must have.

3. Currywurst

Currywurst can be confused as an actual sausage, when in fact it is a German fast food dish. Typically featuring one of our other top 10 German foods, the bratwurst. Chop the Brat into bite-size chunks and cover with Curry Ketchup. Often served alongside chips, the currywurst is a staple dish of Germany, plus it is so easy to recreate and so delicious you would be crazy to not be enjoying this at home.

A Pork Frikadellen Burger with Melted Cheese and Salad in a Bun

Meats

Pork, beef and poultry are your top meats found around Germany. Although sausages may be your first thought when it comes to German food, the meats that are enjoyed here are just as delicious.

4. Frikadellen

First up we have the Frikadellen, also known as German meatballs. However, you will notice from appearance they look more like a burger, much bigger and flatter than traditional meatballs. If served as a main meal these are normally partnered with mash potato and a creamy sauce. But, you can also find them served as a sandwich which is referred to as a German Hamburger.

5. Schnitzel

Schnitzel typically is fried cutlets, most commonly breaded fried cutlets. As with everything there are many varieties. German Schnitzel is traditionally made with pork, best served once fried in oil. However, you do not need to deep fat fry these breaded products, enough for them to swim in is best. Simple to serve just with a slice of lemon and sprig of parsley.

Sides

We cannot talk about German Food without mentioning the sides. As with any main meal it is great to have a side dish and with German cuisine that remains the same. So, let’s sum up our favourite German sides.

6. Spätzle

Another dish found in Bavaria, we have Spätzle, often referred to as German egg pasta. However, in appearance this German food may look like a mash up between pasta and noodles. Perfect as a base for many dishes, you can create German Mac’n’Cheese (Käsespätzle). Krautspätzle, Spinatspatzeln, the list goes on.

7. Sauerkraut

The next must have in our top 10 German Food list is, the flavoursome Sauerkraut. Arguably one the best known side dishes from Germany, sauerkraut is the great base, side dish and topping for any meal. Literally translated as ‘sour cabbage’, the practice of fermenting cabbage to make sauerkraut became popular in Germany during the 16th century – and the process remains largely the same today!

Extras

There are so many German foods that we love, it is difficult to pick a top 10. However, there is still room for a few extras.

8. Brezel

Soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, and we have perfect pretzels. We all know what the traditional shape of pretzels hence the use of this as the emblem of many German bakers. Which is obviously why we all associate and love German pretzels. Perfect with a stein of beer, the salty crispy taste is something that cannot be beaten.

9. Apfelstrudel

Although this dessert may have originated from Austria, there is a lot of cross of over with German and Austrian cuisine, so it is on the list. Found as the dessert option all over Germany, this wafer thin pastry delight, stuffed with fresh apples is a taste bud thrill. And as we know, there is always from dessert and there is definitely always room for an apple strudel.

10. Senf

We couldn’t have our top 10 without mentioning Senf, easily Germany’s favourite condiment. The perfect accompaniment to all German sausages and meats, especially popular with a Bratwurst. The subtle spiced flavour develops with every mouthful and just accompanies the dish flawlessly. If you love mustard then you will definitely love German mustard, and even if you are not usually a fan, German mustard could turn you.

Now we hope your tastebuds and tingling and you can’t wait to get your hands on some delicious German grub. So don’t waste any more time. Shop now and enjoy!
